Without exception, every woodworker's dream is to discover a wonderful set of book-matched slabs of timber and fashion it into a work of art that features a dramatic sweeping grain that enchants...
The basis for this piece of wood art began with the unexpected discovery of a magnificent triad of quarter-sawn planks of highly figured curly zebrawood (Microberlinia brazzavillensis). Properly aged, crafted and finished zebrawood represents one of nature's most spectacular timbers with its exotic pattern, chatoyance (opalescence reminiscent of looking into catâs eye) and undulating creamy sapwood leading to honey-brown heartwood thoroughly punctuated by parallel zebra-like stripes comprised of the narrow veins of dark chocolate brown that warrant the naming of this beautiful timber. Zebrawood, also known as zebrano, is a member of the sweet pea family (Leguminoseae) due in part to the orange colored flowers that resemble those of the better-known sweet pea plant.
The table top, fashioned from two of the set of three planks, features a definitive rift. The third plank was utilized to create the diminutive lower shelf. The book-matched set of table legs and short spreaders have also been fashioned from a single plank of figured American black walnut (Juglans nigra). The hand-tapered legs exhibit a slight taper on the inner sides to compliment the fine lines of the table while giving the appearance that the piece is balancing on its toes. Each piece of timber has been carefully selected to compliment the overall design as well as the unique character of the other pieces.
The success of the design depends upon precise hand-chiseled blind mortise-and-tenon joints (Japanese jigoku-kusabi joinery technique) for permanent attachment of all pieces to create a table that will last for generations. This specific joint has been utilized to maximize the strength and stiffness of the table frame. The hall table has been hand finished with a durable oil-varnish and satin lacquer finish to highlight the naturally contrasting range of colors and protect the beautiful patina of the timber while giving the piece a warm feeling to the touch. Adjustable felt feet allow the table to sit flat and level on uneven floors.
