From Layne: "As a painter, I think of clay and glaze as another form of canvas and paint. Only now the canvas doesn't have to be square, rectangular, or one dimensional! And the glaze has a mind of it's own. I love gesture, whether it's the gesture of the body, the hands or even the hair. I try to relate the gesture to the shape of the vessel. Lately I have enjoyed slinky forms of black cats. They are so expressive, and there is the additional element of their connection to humans."
